West Virginia's government needs to get serious about the needs of women and their families
The West Virginia legislature is racing to pass a law banning abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, HB 4588. Like nine other 20-week bans passed across the country, it uses medically disproven assertions about fetal pain to justify restrictions on abortion access at a point in pregnancy before many fetal and maternal health problems can even be diagnosed.
WV FREE is fighting back, insisting that their state government respect the rights of women and to make personal health care decisions in consultation with their doctors. With only 7 abortions in the entire state of West Virginia occurring after 20 weeks in 2010, this is a solution in search of a problem. WV FREE is asking the legislature to focus on the daily concerns of women and their families, such as workplace fairness during pregnancy, and the protection of water resources following recent catastrophic coal mining waste spills that deprived hundreds of thousands of state residents of their access to safe drinking water.
